My name is Sharon Lin. I received my undergraduate degree in Statistics and Economics from UC Berkeley in 2011, and completed my Master of Data Science from UC Berkeley in 2015.

I took my first Statistics and Economics courses when I was in high school, and became very interested in data analysis and representation. I believe that data is not very useful unless people know how to correctly interpret them, and correctly represented data is very important when it comes to business or policy decisions. Such interest initiated me to pursue further education in the field.

I entered UC Berkeley in Fall, 2007. After taking my core courses in Macroeconomics, Microeconomics, Multivariable Calculus, and Linear Algebra, I took many upper division courses that help me connect my majors of Economics and Statistics. I learned my core Statistics programming skills from Professor Cari Kaufman, who specializes in spatial statistics and analysis of computer experiments among many other fields. During the study, I specialized in programming in R, MySQL, and working with UNIX and XML in conjunction with R. During my study of Econometrics, I also acquainted myself with STATA. Throughout my college career, I also completed extensive study in Statistical Finance, Industrial Policy, Game Theory, Labor Economics, Sample Survey & Experiments, and many more. During my last year at the university, I took on a little challenge on myself and learned Python!

After I graduated, I worked in various start-ups, ranging from gaming to enterprise companies. During this time, I became very knowledgeable in mobile analytics. In 2013, I was accepted to UC Berkeley’s Master of Information and Data Science program. During the program, I’ve gained knowledge in machine learning and big data distributed framework, such as Hadoop and Apache Spark. You can find my GitHub repository here.
